What are the main properties of plastics?

What are the main properties of plastics?

Plastic have appeared only one hundred years, but developed very fast, because many plastics have the excellent and unique properties. There are differences in the performance of different plastics, here are some same properties of plastics.

Good stability, in general plastics have good corrosion resistance in acid, alkali, salt medium of which the concentration, temperature are not high, a few plastics is also resistant to acids, alkalis, for example, the "plastics king"-PTFE (poly tetrafluoroethylene) can withstand even in the strongest corrosion "aqua regia". Plastics are difficult degradation in nature, then are durable for use.

Beautiful and low density, plastics are generally light weight, about 1/2 of aluminum , 1/ 5 of steel, and some plastics such as PE, PP are even lighter than water, so their products are naturally very lightweight. In addition, the majority of plastics are  nice appearance, such as light, transparent, etc., as well as easy for coloring, this can make products with a variety of gorgeous colors, and making the products greatly welcomed. For example,if you are PP bags manufacturer, with adding some colorful master batches in the polypropylene, you can make colorful PP woven bags.

Excellent electrical insulation, most plastics have good electrical insulation properties, as there are not free ions inside the polymers, plastic does not have conductivity, but due to added the additives, make some changes of the electrical insulating properties, most of the plastics have electrical insulation in the low-frequency, low-voltage insulation, a few plastics even have in high frequency, high voltage insulation, so plastics are widely used in electronic, electrical, communications, equipment, and other fields.

Good mechanical properties, the mechanical properties of the plastic is not good compared with the metal, but plastic is much lighter than metal, therefore the calculation of the intensity per unit mass (also called specific strength) is close or exceed the traditional metallic material, and some plastics. Therefore, we can use plastics to make many structural components.

Good barrier properties, plastics have excellent barrier properties to gases and water vapor,  can be used to produce a variety of plastic containers and films, can play a very good waterproof, moisture-proof effect.

Good processability, the plastic resins are low melting point, so are easily melted, can form into dimensionally stable, good quality plastic products in a very short time.
